WELCOME
TO THE SAUGEEN BEACHERS' ON THE WEB!
The
Port Elgin and Saugeen Township Beachers' Organization was started
in the early 1900's and currently has a membership of 300 families
of both seasonal and permanent residents. The Beachers' is the voice
of its members in Saugeen Shores regarding environmental and civic
concerns. We work co-operatively with other partners including the
Town of Saugeen Shores, the Police and Fire departments and the
Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation on issues of mutual concern.
In addition, we are members of the Federation of Ontario Cottage
Association (FOCA) and the Waterfront Ratepayers After Fair Tax
(WRAFT).
LATEST NEWS
1. The Town of Saugeen Shores sprayed the Common Reed (Phragmites australis)
in June. In 2007 it was the Beachers' that contacted the Town officials
and Geoff Peach from the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation about
this major problem along our shoreline. We then organized volunteers to
cut the invasive grasses in July 2007. The Town, after
consulting with experts, took the next steps to eradicate the problem in
2008. The Town has advised us that they will continue to moniter the progress
annually.
2.
The PAYT (Pay as You Throw) program started June 1, 2008. To be
collected every bag of garbage must have an attached sticker. The
$1.50 stickers
are available from Legault's Independent Grocer, Shoppers Drug
Mart, Martin's Home Hardware, Ralph's Hi-way Shoppette, Shoreline
Beacon, Downs Pro Hardware, Giant Tiger, Southampton Foodland,
Municipal Office & Landfill Site, and Paisley Foodland. |
